REPSOL APPOINTS GROUP TO CARRY OUT ARCHITECTURE AND ENGINEERING OF ITS NEW TECHNOLOGY CENTRE

Repsol has appointed a group of companies headed by Leo A Daly, S.A., Spanish affiliate of Leo A Daly in the United States, to carry out the architectural and engineering services for its new technology centre to be built in Mstoles (Madrid). The relevant contract was signed today by Repsols Chairman, Alfonso Cortina, the Chairman and CEO of Leo A Daly, Leo A Daly III, and the Chairman and Managing Director of Alatec Haskoning, S.A., Pedro Canalejo, at Repsols head office in Madrid. Alatec has been assigned the design of the complex under a UTE (temporary joining of companies) agreement.

Repsols new technology centre will cover an area of some 28,000 m2, and will house all the companys technological programmes, and technical assistance laboratories for Chemicals, Distribution and Derivatives. Conceptual engineering studies to date indicate that there will be two main buildings containing all the laboratories and most of the other technical facilities; a building for management and services; another for pilot plants; storage facilities, and a central energy station.

Its main design features will be flexibility (necessary to adapt to the constant changes required in an R&D centre), the possibility to add future extensions without interfering in ongoing activities or in the safety of personnel and installations, and respect for the environment. The building will be exemplary in energy consumption and preservation.

The design and construction of this complex are scheduled for completion in approximately three years, and it will be on a site of 19 Ha, to the north of the N-5 motorway, at the 18 Km. junction, opposite the campus of the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. The Centre for Energy Studies, run by the Repsol Foundation, will also form part of the complex.

Leo A Daly is the second largest company in architecture, engineering and commercial interior design in the U.S.A. It has 14 offices in the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Leo A Daly has designed large urban complexes, institutional buildings, universities, laboratories and R&D centres, including the FDA laboratories in Washington, the Exxon laboratories in Texas, the Energy Centre and Nuclear Laboratory in Houston, the School of Engineering and Applied Science in Los Angeles, and the Sabine River Laboratory for Dupont in Texas. Among its most recent projects, Leo A Daly is known for being the prime architect of Hong Kongs newest skyscraper, the 62-story Cheung Kong tower, and design architect of Kowloons first tower planned to stand 55 stories. It has also undertaken several projects in Spain, such as the design for the Caja Madrid Head Offices in the Kio Towers and several other CM branches, the Palace of Marbella, and the technology laboratory for the Valladolid University, in collaboration with Alatec.
