REPSOL: NEW GAS AND CONDENSATE DISCOVERY IN EGYPT

Repsol Exploracin has discovered a new gas and condensate field on the Khalda concession in the Western Desert of Egypt. This is the sixth discovery in the last eight months.

The discovery well, called Falk West-1 is located at a distance of 7 Km. East from the last discovery in Shams field, and reached a depth of 4,159 metres. During the production tests the well produced 19,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (55 million of cubic feet of gas per day + 9,000 barrels of oil per day).

Moreover, the consortium formed by Repsol, Shell and Apache has concluded with success the first drilling in the North East Abu Gharadig concession. The discovery well, named BW-1, reached a depth of 3,571 metres. The well produced more than 800 barrels per day of 34 API oil during the production tests.

Repsol, jointly with the companies integrating the Khalda Group (Repsol 50%, Apache 40%, Samsung 10%), have planned to drill during 1997 ten exploratory wells in Khalda, twelve development wells and three gas appraisal wells. This Group signed this past January a sales contract with the Egyptian General Petroleum Company (EGPC), the Egyptian state-owned company, in which the Group committed itself to produce 200 million cubic feet of gas per day which will be withdrawn by EGPC, mainly for use in power generation for projects to be developed in the Alexandria area.

Repsol is the third largest oil company in Egypt, with a net production of more than 30,000 barrels per day, from the Khalda, Umbarka, South Umbarka, Gulf of Suez East and Gulf of Suez West concessions. It is placed behind Amoco and Agip, but in front of Shell which is fourth.
