THE BOUTIQUE THE WEATHER INTERACTIVE CAMPSA GUIDE
Fire extingishers, how and when to use them
by Mercedes Snchez
Most household fires are caused by small accidents or carelessness. Knowing about different kinds of fire and how to put them out is a key to avoiding bigger disasters.
One of the best ways to deal with fires in the home is to install a smoke detector -some models can detect gas leaks- and a fire extinguisher. To choose the best of the latter, you need to know about the different kinds of fire that can break out in the home.

Kinds of extinguishers
If you decide to buy a fire extinguisher they come in a variety of sizes and capacities. The devices can spray water or shoot it in streams, or release foam, conventional powder, polyvalent powder, carbon dioxide or a material specifically designed for metal fires. The extinguisher should be kept in a place with easy access, mainly in transit areas such as hallways, staircases and entrances. It is best for the device to be visible, although if for aesthetic reasons you place it inside a cabinet or closet, make sure it is easy to find in a pinch.

The best extinguisher for the home is one using polyvalent powder because it adapts best to all the fires that might break out. If the cause is a short-circuit, or a gas explosion, a water-based extinguisher is not the right kind. In the first case it might trigger an explosion, and with a gas fire, water is not enough to put it out. In these cases, we recommend an extinguisher using polyvalent powder, foam or conventional powder.

The way to use an extinguisher is get as close to the fire as you can and aim the charge at the base of the flames. If you act quickly, the fire can be out in a matter of minutes. Although they are easy to use, you need to know well how the devices you have works. And above all don't lose your cool. If the fire is small you can control it. Otherwise, call the fire department quickly and close the doors and windows of the room with the fire. Fire needs oxygen in order to spread.

Kinds of fire
Rule UNE 23-010-76 of the standards department of the Council for Scientific Research defines four kinds of fire:
- Type A: fire with solid materials, mainly organic.
- Type B: fire with liquid or liquifiable solids.
- Type C: fire from gas.
- Type D: metal fire.

The method for snuffing out a fire depends on what category of fire it is. With Type A it is best to use water, preferable in a spray. If it is Type B, fire will not put it out if the intensity of the fire exceeds 38 degrees. In this case it is best to use foam or polyvalent powder.
