THE BOUTIQUE THE WEATHER INTERACTIVE CAMPSA GUIDE
Protect your home against the cold
by Mercedes Snchez
Winter and the attendant low temperatures are just around the corner. To help you prepare to face the cold, here you have a selection of the different heating systems you can install in your home.

The most appropriate heating system for your home will depend on various factors, such as the size of your home or the climate of the area you live in. Two individual heating systems stand out among the many available: electric heating, which can be direct, storage or mixed, and natural gas heating.

Electric heating systems
If heat is produced and circulated simultaneously, the heating system is direct. These systems can be either floor, ceiling, solar panel, or oil-based.

If, on the other hand, the heat is generated and stored to be later circulated, the heating is storage-based.This is one of the most common systemsfor dealingwith very cold temperatures.

The initial investment is larger than in other systems, but the long-term difference is considerable. In this type of installation, you should choose the type of storage heaters according to your requirements. For example, in the rooms which require heat during the day -lounge, entrance, study- use a special type of heaterthan the used in rooms thatrequire less heating, such as the bathroom, bedrooms or kitchen. The former require large-capacity storage heaters, which can be static or dynamic. In the latter, convectors (smaller than storage heaters and with an electric resistor through which the air passes and is heated up), are sufficient to maintain the heat.

Mixed heating, as its name suggests, is the combination of both systems. This is the most appropriate for homes with an average heating consumption, generally the case in more temperate climates.

Natural gas heating
This increasingly popular system distributes heat through pipes installed in the home -mainly floor and ceiling-based- which are connected to radiators located throughout the home.

Whether a gas or electric installation is more appropriate to your needs clearly depends on the amount of heat your home requires. The installation of both systems is similar in price. The difference is that the electric heating option can take advantage of the night-time rate to store heat and later distribute it throughout the day. Natural gas meanwhile is very easy to use because it is clean, there is no need to worry about accumulation (as in butane gas cylinders) and can also be used in the kitchen to generate hot water.

Air-conditioners
One alternative that is becoming increasingly popular is the air-conditioning system, above all because they offer the twin advantage of distributing hot air in winter and cold air in summer. The main disadvantage is that this system cannot use the night-time rate and their use can be pricey. However, in hot areas with only a few cold months a year, this may the most advisable option.
