THE BOUTIQUE THE WEATHER INTERACTIVE CAMPSA GUIDE
Second-hand cars
by Antonio de Lorenzo
Thinking about buying a second-hand car? If you are you should keep a few things in mind so as to avoid unpleasant surprises. Whether the transaction is between individuals, with an intermediary or a specialized dealership it is best to follow these tips and know your rights and obligations.

A deal between two private parties
The advantage of a deal between two private parties is that they save the cost of paying fees to an intermediary. But it makes it harder to file a claim if the car turns out to have a problem. This transaction must be done with a contract. Before signing it, make sure all fines levied against the old driver are paid up and that the car has no lawsuits pending. If you can, have a mechanic check out the cars condition.

Through a dealer
Small used-car dealerships are an option that offer personalized treatment, more flexibility to reduce the sale price and detailed consulting. The downside is that these businesses tend not to have a large selection, so the dealer might offer just what he has in stock and this might not suit the prospective buyer.

Meanwhile larger dealers can offer better terms of financing and models to choose from.

In either case, the vehicles on display must show the following data: titleholder, period of guarantee, mileage, age of the car, price, result of the last official inspection, serial number, the maintenance record if it has undergone any major repair or suffered an accident, and the licence plate.

Have your papers in order
The papers that must be submitted include the inspection certificate, the driving permit of the car, proof of payment of the latest vehicle tax, the DNI identity card of the buyer and seller, the certificate of the sale and proof of payment of the regional government tax assessed according to the sale price. It is a good idea to demand that the car have passed the latest inspection, or ITV. To learn more about the car you can check the governments car registry to see if the vehicle has been involved in accidents or infractions. Keep in mind the following deadlines: a person who turns his or her car over to a dealer to have it sold has 10 days to have the car removed temporarily from the traffic registry; the buyer has 30 days to register the car under his or her name and put the driving permit under his or her name.

All these essential legal proceedings are easier if the buyer and seller go about it together.
