Rights of taxi users

Spain's various regions have their own legislation on taxi services, and they all coincide in the basic rights of passengers. In taxis and any other mode of public transport, common sense, responsibility and getting along are the key features of a set of rules that it is a good idea to get to know, in case there is a problem.

Taxi service should be done in conditions of equality, quality and safety. But the driver can refuse to provide services if the client has illicit ends or there are risky circumstances for the safety or physical integrity of the users, or risk of damage for the vehicle.

In a broad sense, ignoring variations that can exist from one Spanish region to another, taxi users have the following rights:�
  • To know the licensen number and rates applied to services. These documents should be clearly visible in the car.
  • Users can carry luggage as long as the size fits the norms established for this sector. The driver should pick up the luggage and put in the trunk of the vehicle.
  • Users can request a receipt showing the price of the trip, the origin and the destination, as well as the taxi's license number.
  • They can choose whatever route they want. If the passenger does not specify a route, the driver will always take the one that seems to be the shortest, depending on the distance involved in the trip and the expected time.�
  • See rules on addictive substances respected with regard to the ban on smoking in taxis.
  • Require abidance by traffic laws.
  • Require that the taxi provide adequate sanitary conditions.
  • Ask the driver to turn down or turn off the radio.
  • Get into the taxi comfortably and safely. In this sense drivers must help people with limited mobility to get into and out of the taxi, or those traveling with children. They must also take along whatever equipment the travelers need, such as wheel chairs or strollers.
  • If it is dark, the user can ask that the light inside the taxi be turned out when they get in or out of the taxi or when they pay.
  • Get in or out of the taxi in places where personal safety is assured and traffic norms respected.
  • Receive the exact change coming to them when they pay.
  • At taxi stands, to choose whichever vehicle they want, expect if there is a system of taking turns among the drivers. In every case, the right to choose depends on objective circumstances such as whether or not the taxi has air conditioning, the taxi's conditions or hygine and the form of payment.
  • People who are blind or vision-impaired can travel with seeing-eye dogs for free without paying extra.
  • Make whatever complaints they deem necessary regarding the service provided.
  • Open or close windows and ask that the air condition be turned off or on as they see fit.�
