State security forces
These are the most well known and the first to call in the event of burglary, car accidents or assault:

� 091. National police force. The same number applies all over Spain and must only be called in an emergency. Nevertheless, many citizens call this numbre for advice or to report a crime that is not urgent, which is why the lines are often saturated. Following a call, the nearest available police presence will make their way to the place indicated as rapidly as possible. In addition, if additional assistance is needed -ambulances, medical attention- the operators will ensure they are called.
� 092. Local police force. Also applicable to all of Spain. Has more limited functions than the 091 number - due to the difference between local and national police - but in an emergency situation will provide all the assistance necessary, contacting other services if required.
� 062. Emergency number of the Guardia Civil. Its function is similar to the previous two, with the difference that the number is less known and generally used in emergencies away from big cities.
� 900 123 505. Information number�of the�Traffic Police. Its main function is to inform on the state of the roads and alternative routes in case of accidents, and if we have no other number they will contact the relevant authorities to find assistance.

Medical services and other emergencies
When you need medical help, the following numbers are the most useful:
� 061. Emergency number of INSALUD (National Health Service) and applicable to all Spain in case of a medical emergency. In smaller towns, the number may be different, so it is best to check with the local council. 061 will bring all the medical help necessary to your home and will also give advice over the phone (while the assistance arrives) on how to deal with the injured party.
� 112. This service is not yet nationwide but works in some autonomous communities, such as Madrid. This number covers all the emergency services that may be required in case of an emergency. With a single call explaining what has occurred, you will be put through to the fire, medical, police, civil protectio or other services. It is a highly useful service, as only one call is necessary, which will shortly be installed in the country as a whole.
� 080. This is the emergency number of the Fire Brigrades in most provincial capitals, while 085 is the number in the rest of the country. Make sure you know which number applies to you.

Other useful numbers
When you have an accident, it is not always an emergency, a burlgary or a fire. There are other situations -social emergencies- in which calling someone may do a great deal of good.
� SITADE: the Telephone Information and Attention Service for Social Emergencies, 900 100 333. This number -currently available in the Community of Madrid- gives you access to information and social assistance, especially for immigrants, homeless, disabled, elderly living alone and low income families, among others.
� Domestic violence: this is the number to call in case of domestic violence or to report cases, 900 100 114. In recent months, many women have used this service and have given support in their efforts to escape their situation.

In addition to these services, there are several useful numbers to call in situations such as the loss of your credit card, and other objects, or that of your local police station. The best advice if you want these to hand is to make a special list and keep it near the telephone; under the handset, for example. In this way, you will never lose valuable time locating the correct number.
