THE BOUTIQUE THE WEATHER INTERACTIVE CAMPSA GUIDE
Children and heat sources
by Mercedes Snchez
Domestic accidents involving children are highly frequent due to their natural curiosity. Some 95% of childrens' accidents could be avoided by taking some basic precautions that should be part of the daily habits of every adult sharing a home with children.

Children lack the necessary experience to avoid danger and also tend to enjoy imitating adults, even if they do not understand the behaviour in question. For this reason it is vital to take some precautions when it comes to certain installations of heat in the home.

In the children's bedroom
If you have a radiator installed in the children's bedroom, try to cover it with a specially-designed piece of furniture made of wood or plastic, which is not only decorative but preventative, ensuring children do not burn themselves touching the radiator. If you have a stove or similar, this should also be protected to ensure they do not touch it or introduce objects that may burn. The room temperature should also be kept at a moderate level.

Children are attracted by fire, so you should never leave matches or lighters within their reach. If they have seen how they work, they will soon light them.

In the kitchen
The kitchen is one of the most dangerous places for children. The handles of pans should always face inwards to avoid possible accidental spills. If you need to transport hot liquids, try to do it when the children are not around.

When aerosol cans are empty they are inflammable, so it remains dangerous to leave them within reach of children, especially near the kitchen or heat sources.

In the bathroom
When hot water is used and the tap is opened, some water is retained. Many light burns are caused by this, above all among children, who have particularly sensitive skin. To prevent run the cold water a little after using the hot, until the temperature stabilises.
When it comes to bathing the children, check the water temperature with a thermometer if you have one or else dip in your elbow. In this way, you can check the water temperature to ensure it will not burn your children's skin.

In the event of burns
If your child burns him or herself in spite of these precautions, immediately apply cold tap water, which will stop the pain and keep the burn from spreading. Do not apply ice or ice-cold water, as this could freeze the injury.

If the burn is serious, do not apply any bandages, which could macerate the wound and make it stick to the plaster. Do not apply any creams and seek urgent medical attention.
