Technology to the rescue of babies
by Mercedes Snchez
The arrival of a new member of the family is quite an event, above all if its your first child. All your habits change, extreme caution is taken with everything and, most of all, the baby has to be kept under extra vigilance. In order to make life easier for the parents, technology has now come to their rescue.

There are currently numerous products available at reasonable prices which will monitor the health of your baby.

Time for a bath
A baby's first few baths are usually complicated affairs, but there are different devices on the marketplace to help you in this task. There are tiny chairs, with a high backrest and rounded forms where the baby may be seated when it is a few months old. They usually have a slip-proof base and several suction cups to adhere to the bottom of the bath. They are extremely stable and can withstand the most playful of babies.

There are also various thermometers available that can be installed in the bath to check the water's temperature. One of the most innovative thermometers can be fixed to the bottom of the bath where the water is always hotter.

One accessory that combines both the above devices checks the temperature and prevents slippage are the new anti-slippage mats for the bath interior. They come in various designs and colours and stick easily to the bottom of the bath, changing colour from lighter to darker shades when the temperature of the water is too high.

In the bedroom
In the first few months of their lives babies need to sleep plenty of hours. There are numerous technological devices available to monitor their sleep. The well-known transmitters have two devices: one is placed in the baby's cot and the other in the parents' bedroom. The standard models only transmit the sound emanating from the baby's room, thus alerting the parents that their child is awake. These transmitters have recently made great advances. Some new models even incorporate a tiny camera, enabling the parents to see what is going on in the child's room on their computer screen, for example, or even in the comer of the TV screen. They cost around 150 to 300 euros.

There are some devices, however, that go even further and are able to measure
the child's respiratory movements.
They also warn you if the baby suffers from
apnea during sleep, that is to say, if his or her breathing becomes troubled or even stops
for a few seconds.

Why is my baby crying?
It is difficult knowing exactly why a child is crying: if they are hungry, sleepy or in pain. Many investigators have tried to analyse the crying of babies. One of them, the Spanish engineer Pedro Moragas, has launched a device called Why Cry, which is based on an analysis of the acoustic signal emitted by a baby's crying. By measuring its frequency and volume the device can determine the child's mood and the reason why he or she is crying.

It works in a very simple way. When the baby cries, the device should be placed near the child for 20 seconds to capture their crying, which is then analysed and in just a few seconds the cause is determined. In short, the main aim of all these products is the you can never be too safe, and a small investment in these devices can make your life easier and prevent more than one misfortune affecting your baby.
