THE BOUTIQUE THE WEATHER INTERACTIVE CAMPSA GUIDE
Fitting out the home for pensioners
by Mercedes Snchez
Life expectancy has increased considerably over the past few years, and hence the number of pensioners. But this ageing population is limited in many ways and requires a special attention. Designing a home in tune with these requirements helps pensioners to adapt better to their situation and retain part of their independence.

Due to their age, the physical capabilities of pensioners are severely reduced, which is
why their homes have to be adapted to meet these new requirements. A few simple improvements will convert the home into a far more comfortable and secure place.

Passages
The first step is to avoid the accumulation of furniture in passages (corridors, stairs, halls) to prevent possible falls. The furniture located in these areas should be well fixed to the wall, thus stopping the furniture from falling. There should be as few objects as possible at floor level in the home.

If the pensioner needs a wheelchair, the doorways need to be wide, above all those of
the bedroom and bathroom, to facilitate access and mobility. Avoid furniture with too many edges and corners; if unavoidable, you can buy corner protector made of plastic or rubber, which are very easy to position and will round off the most prominent corners.

In the bedroom
There are a wide variety of articulated beds available on the market to facilitate the mobility of pensioners. These beds have different systems -electric or manual- to enable
the individual to climb on and off, as well as adjustable legs. It is also advisable to install a removable bar, which can be regulated in height and width to avert possible falls during the night. These bars can be converted into small bedside where the pensioner can store his or her belongings without having to leave the bed.

In the bathroom
The bathroom is one of the areas that will need the most adapting, above all if it is small. It
is best to install some moveable and rigid handles next to the toilet to facilitate mobility
. Placing a small stool in the shower is also advisable to enable the pensioner to sit more comfortably and safely and prevent accidental slips. These stools can be rotating to increase mobility.

These minor improvements will not only make the home safer, but also far more comfortable.
