THE BOUTIQUE THE WEATHER INTERACTIVE CAMPSA GUIDE
Prepare your home for the holidays
by Mercedes Snchez
Summer is here which for many of us means going off on holiday. If you want to avoid an unpleasant surprise on your return, you should need some of the following advice about preventing robberies and accidents at home.

Basic precautions
  • Ensure your doors and windows are securely closed. Check the locks are in perfect working order.
  • Leave the shutters halfway up to give the impression that someone is home.
  • Give a trusted neighbour the key to your letterbox, so that they may remove your mail. If you are subscribed to magazine or similar, advise them in good time that you are off on holiday.
  • Do not tell everyone you are off on holiday or leave a message on your answer machine suggesting you are away.
  • Check there is no gap between the front door and the floor that can be levered. If you are thinking of redecorating your house in the future, a reinforced front door is one of the best security investments.
  • Leave valuables in your bank's safe or with a trustworthy person.
  • When the home is going to empty for a long period of time, the best option is to install an automatic timing device, programmed to switch the lights, TV or Hi-fi on for a pre-set time. This gives outsiders the impression that the house is inhabited.
  • If you live in a low house, check that the access via garden, roof and basement is well secured. If you live in an attic or ground-floor flat, check that access via roofs or balconies is well protected.
Alarm installation
Another option to protect your home is to install an alarm. You can find a variety of different models on the market at varying prices, depending on your requirements. You can also hire an alarm system direct from a security company. When the alarm detects an intruder, it contacts the company and the police, who will immediately despatch a security guard to your home address.
In addition to these security measures, it is also advisable to carry out an inventory of the most valuable objects at your home: DVD players, videos, TV, etc. In the event of a robbery, this list may help speed up matters with the police.

Possible accidents
However, robbers are not the only harbingers of unpleasant surprises when you return from holidays. Your installations and household electrical items can also cause damage during your absence.
  • Disconnect all the electrical devices in your home. Cut off all electrical currents apart from the one supplying the fridge to prevent short-circuits.
  • Also shut down the water supply. A small leak of water or a tap that is not shut properly can end up flooding your home.
  • Check that all the gas taps are closed as well as the main gas supply key.
By taking some precautions and following this advice, returning from your holidays will be pleasant and calm and without any shocks. Have a good trip!
