THE BOUTIQUE THE WEATHER INTERACTIVE CAMPSA GUIDE
Eating light at Christmas time
by Miguel L. Castanier
When the Christmas season comes around, it seems almost an obligation to eat rich foods at all the meals we are invited to. And if we wash down those delicacies with more alcohol than we are used to drinking, the result can be indigestion. Here we make some suggestions for avoiding that discomfort in the upcoming holiday season.

Light breakfast
It is a good idea to eat a lighter breakfast and lunch than usual, but never skip these two meals because the body is used to ingesting food at certain times of day.

It is enough to reduce the amount of food we eat, or substitute what we normally eat for lighter foods such as salad, fruit and yogurt. It is better to say no to a piece of pastry or a meal rich in fat than to not eat at all.

If you are not able to change your culinary habits, just eat half of what your normal breakfast would be. So instead of eating a whole pack of cookies, just have a few. Or have that toasted croissant without butter or marmalade.

Lunch
The next step is to avoid excessive fat, proteins and starch during regular meals. In other words, this is not a good time to eat heavy stews, fabada or huge paellas. Just have a small portion of these dishes.

Another way to avoid indigestion is to refrain from flopping down on a sofa after a big lunch or dinner. This helps not only to burn fat, but also to avoid a rise in your cholesterol level.

It is not necessary to change your habits drastically and turn vegetarian. It is simply a question of eating more vegetables for a while and cutting down on heavy foods that are hard to digest. So it you eat cream of vegetable soup, for instance, no croutons, please. And cook fish papillote-style. Game meat is low in fat, and serve it with little seasoning. The same with fresh mushrooms that are in season. And don't forget your daily ration of virgin olive oil.
