Food or medicine?

The lack of nutrition and an environment which is more and more aggresive, our bodies natural defenses are reduced. In order to face up to these adversaries, we are revealing the secrets of some of these foods whose main active ingredients make them excellent antioxidants, detoxifiers and anti-carcinogenics. Include them in your menu.

Mango, a juicy and healthy fruit
Originating from Malaysia and India, this tropical fruit appears in numerous legends and stories about Buddha. It�s shape reminds us of that of a giant peach and in order to make the right choice whilst shopping it is important to take into account that "size matters": the bigger the mango, the juicier and�more nutritional it is.

It offers great benefits for the health, as it has abundant carbohydrates, fibre, folic acid and vitamins B,C and E. It is one of the few fruits that exceed the 30% of the daily contribution of Vitamin A, which is neccesary for the body, and contains between 15 and 17% of sugar, for which reason it is energy giving. Besides, it is rich in beta carotenes, potassium, pantothenic acid, calcium and iron, and is a fantastic anti-toxin agent.

As it neither contains fat nor sodium, it is therefore an excellent to take into account in slimming diets. In order to fully enjoy its taste it should be eaten cold, be it by itself, in salads, in cakes and tarts, or saut�ed with fruit, adorning a delicious dessert.

Papaya, the melon of angels
This delicious tropical fruit, which is similar in appearance to melons and dubbed by Colombus as "The fruit of angels" is especially rich in beta carotenes, folic acid, vitamins A and C, potassium and fibre, which make it an authentic nturitional, digestive and laxative ally. Besides, its antioxidant properties take a fundamental role in the fight to prevent cancer and arterioschlerosis (the blocking of the arteries).

Sweet and tasty, the papaya is an authentic source of health and can be eaten by itself or accompanied by ice cream and salads, as well as adorning meat and fish. In the form of juice or in jam, one can enjoy the special benefits of one of the star components "la papa�na", which is a digestive enzyme similar to the human pepsin which breaks down prteins and is favourable for the digestive process. The medical use of this enzyme has been approved in the USA to relieve pains, due to its analgesic powers.

Quinoa, all protein
It is a plant known in South America for 4,000 years which the Inca population christened "grano madre" (mother grain). It tender leaves are eaten as if they were spinach and its seeds, which are abundant and small, are consumed in the same way as rice. It is the fundamental ingredient in the diet of the countries of the high Andean plateau, in Europe it is commercialized in the form of pasta, the whole cereal and flour, and it is conquering the European diet due to its excepcional nutritional value. Its good reputation is owing to the quantity main agents that it contains: abundant in protein and iron, as well as magnesium, potassium, zinc, fibre y vitamins of group B. It is very digestive and has a highly balanced fat content, starch and sugar, it can be had for breakfast as cereal, in salads, sauces and soups, or as a garnish accompanying pasta. In the showcases of health food shops, dietary shops and supermarkets it can be bought.

Staying healthy by drinking
From now on, substitute coffee and Coca Cola for an infusion which you can easily find in supermarkets, health food shops and naturist shops: Green tea.

Mainly consumed in China and Japan, it is the version which has not been fermented of balck tea which we know in the West. As it not treated, it maintains higher levels of flavonoids than black tea, which in turn gives it important antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties.
In the East they say that it prolongs life and could even avoid the appearance or the growth of certain types of ski, lung and some digestive system organs cancer.
In Chinese medicine it is being used to fight against head aches, dysentry, coughs, gastroenteritis and even hepatitis. It increases the response capacity of the human body against infections and is indicatd for the treatment of herpes, warts and Acne. Thanks to its action on free radicals it stops celular ageing and has an excellent diuretic and anti-fat effect.
