Materials:
- Pine tray (from do-it-yourself shops).
- Black lacquer paint.
- Glass squares or gresite tiles from hardware stores. Should be within the same color range.
- Small roller, round brush, strong sandpaper for wood.
- Alkyl glue (white paste that turns transparent when it dries)
Steps:
1. Measure the tray so you know what size glass squares or tiles you need. They should fit in perfectly, so that when you glue them down they lie flat with no spaces between them. Some hardware stores will cut them for you.
2. Sand the tray down until it is totally smooth. If it is recycled it should be totally free of the previous coat of paint. Run the sandpaper over it several times. Clean the surface well with a dry cloth and paint it carefully so that it is even on all sides. It is best to use a roller, but a brush for the corners. When it dries, paint the back side of the tray as well.
3. With a brush apply a thick coat of Alkyl on the base of the tray. Glue the glass squares on one-by-one so that the entire base is covered and there is no space between them. When it is totally dry, apply a thin layer of Alkyl on top of the glass squares to the surface is smooth and the squares stick well to each other.
Advices:
The bigger the tray, the better the technique works, especially if it is an old tray and you are renovating it. It is an attractive gift that is easy to make. Furthermore, this try is very useful for serving an aperitivo or breakfast.
