Utility: Reuse broken or deteriorated objects.
Difficulty: Easy.
Cost: Low.
Materials: - Kaolin powder and titanium dioxide (specialised drug stores).
- Normal and epoxy glue.
- Sandpaper.
- Watercolours.
- Brushes, acrylic varnish and sprayer.
Steps:
1. Thoroughly clean the edges of the breakage to ensure that the glue sticks well. Never use cotton wool to do this since it leaves threads. Use a cotton cloth moistened in water and ammonia. Once clean, you can begin gluing the pieces. Make sure they all coincide perfectly.
2. Apply the glue to the edges of both pieces and join them together, removing the excess glue before it dries with a cloth dipped in alcohol. Press together firmly until the glue is dry.
3. To ensure that the joint cannot be seen fill it with a little putty made by mixing together the kaolin powder with a little glue. When dry, this putty has the same texture as porcelain and the breakage will not be noticeable. Press firmly so that it enters deeply and when dry carefully pass over some fine sandpaper to leave it smooth and level. If necessary, repaint the design with watercolours and, when dry, spray with acrylic varnish.
Advices: - Never throw away a broken plate or jar, especially if they are old, since you can mend them in just a few hours and with a little patience. Try to follow these steps and you will be surprised at the final result, especially if the piece is valuable to you and youd rather not throw it away: now is the time to recover it. |
