How to level a floor
by Manuel G. Blzquez
Leveling a floor is a very simple operation that is especially useful when you are going to apply another covering. It is a typical task for do-it-yourself junkies because it makes subsequent work with the floor easier. Besides repairing irregularities, it improves the adherence of glues and pastes for floors.

Tools and materials
Leveling paste
Water
Tray
Spatula
Cutter
Trowel
Brush
Leveling strip

What is leveling paste?

o It is generally sold as a powder to be mixed with water.
o It is applied as a preliminary step before putting down a new floor.
o Fixes irregularities or slight unevenness and can be used on many kinds of surfaces, from mortar to ceramics, concrete and even wood.
o It will improve the adherence of the final floor. But keep in mind that the layer should be thicker in the case of ceramic floors or parquet, or for floor paint. If you are going to lay carpet, cork or plastic tiles all you need is a thin layer.

Calculate how much you need

o Pay close attention to the manufacturer's instructions. It will specify the amount needed for each square meter.
o Now all you need to do is measure how much you need. Measure the surface you are going to level.
o The thickness you seek to obtain is also important. Aim for 8 mm. Also, don't forget the uneven spot or spots you are trying to correct.

How to do it
o First check the solidity of the floor covering. Regardless of the material it must stick perfectly to what is underneath. Check with a blade if necessary.
o If there are broken tiles or openings that are too big, it is best to eliminate the loose pieces and apply cement paste for a better fill.
o If it is an old wooden floor, remove the nails and cover up all holes.
o Once the floor is completely clean, wet it by sprinkling water with a brush, and spread the paste you have prepared in a bucket. It should be well beaten and look homogeneous and thick.
o Begin at an inner corner of the room and work your way toward the door.
o At the same time you should spread paste and fill in holes with a leveling strip.
o Finally, with a trowel make semicircular movements, raising the forward edge slightly.
o You need not work fast, but keep in mind the manufacturer's instructions on how long it takes the paste to dry. It is usually more than an hour.

The new covering
o If you need to make the leveling thicker, let the first layer dry and repeat the operation.
o Regardless of the material you are going to lay, don't step on the leveled paste for 48 hours.
