Tools and materials The tools needed to install sliding doors depend on whether the doors in question will be made of wood, chipboard or glass. A drill, screwdriver, spirit level, saws if you intend to put in a double door and bricklaying implements and material if you intend to hide the sliding doors with a new wall.

Support for a rail o When buying a rail, take into account quality and the weight to be supported. This is fundamental when it comes to supporting the weight of the sliding door or doors. o Once you have chosen where to install the sliding doors, you should check whether the spot is appropriate or whether you need to build a new structure with partition walls made of laminated plaster, metal or wood. o The upper rail support should be made of solid wood and be perfectly levelled.

Open sliding door o This is the simplest method. Cut a made to measure strip of wood at least 4x4 centimetre thick and screw it into several places along the wall at the correct height. o At the end in which the door will close, place a vertical strip of wood that will act as doorstop. It should be the same thickness as the previous one to ensure perfect placement. o Then screw the rail guide into the horizontal strip of wood. These guides regulate the stops corresponding to forward and backward movement of the sliding door. o Screw the rail's ball bearings into the upper edge of the strip, according to the manufacturer's recommendations. o Screw the guides into the floor to prevent the door from toppling over. o Finally, place the door into the upper rail guide and check that it moves easily.

Built-in sliding door o The installation is similar but needs to cover the door space with a double wall. o A simple and rubble-free method is to build a double separating wall to the right width with laminated plaster boards. o These separating walls are set up by screwing the panels on to the double wood or metal structure, which is then fixed to the floor and roof with horizontal and vertical reinforcements. o The upper rail is screwed on to the transversal guide where the bearings supporting the doors are located.
