State of the surface
oBefore proceeding to waterproof a balcony which is already floored, the state of the paving should be checked. o Check to see if there are any unsealed joints between the tiles. Also make sure there are no broken or loose tiles. oCheck the wall and drain joints for cracks. o If necessary, repair the above with suitable products and using the right methods. oIf the surface is cement, make sure there are no loose parts.

Layer of insulation paint oIf the balcony is not going to be practical, the waterproofing solution is very easy. o Clean dust and all work remains from the surface. It should also be dry. o With a large brush or roller extend a layer of waterproof rubber paint. This product dries up on contact with damp and its elasticity prevents water from passing through. Do not forget joints and at a 10 centimetre distance to walls to guarantee perfect waterproofing in all parts. oLeave to dry for 24 hours before passing a second hand of paint in a perpendicular direction to the first. o It is advisable not to use very hot or cold paint, or paint when it is raining or threatening to rain. o The thickness of the layer of paint should be at least 1.5 mm. If not, repeat. Wait at least 48 hours before stepping on the surface. oBetter insulation is achieved by placing a fibre glass or synthetic board before applying the last layer of waterproofer.

Waterproofing boards oIf a balcony is going to be used a lot by the inhabitants of the house or a new floor is going to be laid, a bituminous or plastic plank at least 2.5mm thick should be installed. oAfter installing the floor base and before adding the finish, tiles or other, place the waterproofing board, taking care that it extends at least 10 cm from each to guarantee the insulation of the joints. oInstall a new base on the insulating board ready for the new tiles or finish.
