Finishing off panel edges
by Manuel G. Blzquez
Around the house there are lots of things made from wood-based manufactured materials: furniture, shelves, kitchen cabinets, drawers, tables, etc. If you have built them yourself using particleboard panels on both sides, after sawing the boards you will have to finish off the edges. You can also do this if the edges have worn down. Tape for this purpose is sold in rolls, and made of plastic or wood.

Tools and materials
Tape for edges, either plastic or wood in the appropriate color, grain and style. It can be purchased with glue already on it, or if not, use tape to hold it in place while you work; a hammer, cutting blade, a wooden block, file for metal and a manual tightener for the ends of the tape.

Using glue
oCut the necessary length of tape. Measure each edge from end to end, and add a few centimeters to allow for corrections.
oSpread the glue evenly with a brush, if the tape does not have glue. The glue you use should be contact glue, and you should apply it to both the edge of the panel and the surface of the tape.
oAllow it to dry for a few minutes, following the manufacturer's instructions, and place the tape on the edge.
oTap gently with a hammer, but place a block of wood between the hammer and the edge of the hammer. Don't hammer directly on the panel.
oAnother option for eliminating bubbles is to press with the wooden block or a finishing hammer. A roller will also work.
oAllow it to dry the necessary length of time, and if possible place a weight on the surface.
oRemember that this kind of glue does not allow corrections. So be careful when putting the tape in place. Make sure it covers the entire edge.

Using pre-glued tape and an iron
oThis technique makes it all much easier. After cutting the tape, place it along the edge of the panel and at the same time press down with the iron.
oThe iron should be set on the right temperature. For instance, the one for ironing cotton. If possible use an iron that does not give off steam.
oMake sure the tape adheres properly. If necessary go over it again with the iron. In any case, if the glue on the tape gets cold you will have to go over it again with the iron until it melts.
oPress down on the tape to make it stick, just as you did in the previous case with tape that requires use of glue.
oIf excess glue oozes out, wipe it away with a damp cloth.

Finishing off the edges
oWhen the glue is dry and you are sure tape is adhering well, you have to finish off the edges.
oCut off the excess from the edges with the tightener or a very shape blade.
oCut or file so the seam of the edges is not seen. You can do this with sandpaper and a block of wood, a blade or a fine-pointed file for use with metal.
oPlace the file or sandpaper at a 30 degree angle.
oThere are manual edge profilers that make all of the above easier. Buy one if you are going to be doing a lot of this work.
