Installing a new antenna socket for the TV
by Manuel G. Blzquez
The telescopic antennas of TVs do not always work as well as we would wish. For this reason, it is advisable to have an installation connected to the antenna on the roof, whether it is collective or individual. Inside the home you can have as many sockets as you wish, even if you only have one at first. Here we explain how to install them.

Tools and materials
You will need the meters of 75w coaxial cable that correspond to the distance to the new socket; a surface or built in antenna socket; fitting hooks for the cable or cable channels if you want to hide them; screwdriver; knife and cable stripper. If you need to go through walls you will need a drill and drill bits.

Cable characteristics
- The antenna cable is usually thick and white. The outer plastic layer serves as an insulator.
- A thin metallic mesh, which serves as the earth conductor, separates this layer from another plastic layer which covers the copper wire and which prevents the signal from being lost. This wire is attached to the socket terminal.

Stapling and stripping
- Measure the required length of cable from the existing antenna socket to the new one.
- If it is easier for you, staple the cable on to the wall, hiding it just above the skirting board.
- If the cable has to cross into another room, you will have to drill a hole at the appropriate point. Many times you can make a small hole in the frame of a door, even if this requires more metres of cable than if you cross the dividing wall between rooms.
- Using a knife, cut around the cable until you reach the metallic mesh and strip the cable about three centimetres down. Cut the plastic and bend the mesh backwards. It is best for the mesh not to touch the copper wire if you want a good signal.
- Strip the cable that protects the wire about a centimetre down.

Connecting the wires
- Open the original socket and install the new wire into the same terminal.
- Firmly screw in the connection.
- Install the end of the wire into the other TV antenna socket.
- You can now place the mechanism into the trimming cover.

Hiding the cable
- The cables can easily be hidden if you staple them above the skirting board or make channels.
- If you wish you can use you can install a plastic cable channel circuit.
