Protecting and restoring wood oIf the piece of furniture or beam has areas that are seriously deteriorated, i.e. they have lost their consistency, we recommend a previous step, sawing off that section or scraping it with an adze, for example. o If you need to reinforce the piece, you can use joints or pegs. oRemove the furniture from the place where it was, especially if this was an insect-infested spot. These are usually damp, dark and poorly ventilated.
Several solutions for the same product oClean the affected area with a stiff-bristle brush. oApply the anti-insect product. There are several formats. A paint brush will cover the whole surface. oYou can also inject it by drilling small holes in the wood, then cover them with plugs or wood cement. oThe traditional method is with an injecting needle. Inject the liquid into the holes left by the insects when they emerge from the wood. oYou can also use spray. There are spray devices with a thin tube that you can stick in the insect holes. oThen there is the possibility of soaking the wood. For instance, place the legs of a table or chair in a bowl full of anti-insect liquid. The wood will absorb it.
Preventive treatment oIn both old and new wood it is a good idea to prevent attacks from insects that feed on wood. oThere are a variety of chemical products designed for this purpose. One efficient technique is to apply a deep varnish over the entire wooden surface. Most manufacturers of varnish offer a product like this. oThese normally flat, colorless products penetrate deep in the wood and are absorbed. They also protect against environmental factors such as fungi, mold and scum. oIt is applied with a brush or spray gun. oYou must repeat the operation after letting it dry as suggested by the manufacturer.
Tips oWhen a piece is seriously damaged sometimes you have no choice but to replace it, be it a leg, beam or parquet floor. If the attacks is limited to one spot, you must eliminate it to keep it from spreading. oIf you cannot work in an isolated, well-ventilated place, you can do these procedures then seal the furniture or the damaged area of it. Keep it sealed the length of time recommended by the manufacturer.
