THE BOUTIQUE THE WEATHER INTERACTIVE CAMPSA GUIDE
Installing a new electrical outlet with a ground
by Manuel G. Blzquez
At home it seems you always need a new electrical outlet nearby for a new appliance. We recommend you install it with a ground wire. But dont forget that if the appliance you are going to plug in consumes a lot of electricity, like an oven, or uses water, such as a washing machine, you need to buy the right cables and plugs.

Tools and materials
- Pickaxe
- Hammer and chisel to dig grooves
- Spade
- Spatula to spread plaster
- Plaster or sealing paste
- Tubes for electrical cables
- A box for the mechanism
- External conduits for the cables and boxes for their mechanisms
- Conducting cables: phase, neutral and ground
- Screwdriver

Making the grooves
- Mark the groove starting from the closest distribution box. Make sure there are no other wires or water pipes nearby.
- Work with a pickaxe or a hammer and chisel. Wear protective gloves.
- Measure the new box for the mechanism and make a groove of the appropriate depth.
- Clean away all remains and dust. With a bit of plaster, put the box in place. Make sure it ends up level with the rest of the wall. Before, you will have had to break open the hole through which the cable tube will pass.
- Introduce the tube in the groove, attaching it in several spots with a bit of plaster. Finish off with a spade and a trowel if necessary.
- Before it all dries you can apply a thin coat of plaster. If it does not turn out well, rectify by sanding down until the surface is smooth.
- When it is all set in place you can insert the cables with a cable guide. If it is not too long, try it directly by joining the ends of the wires with insulating tape, rolling them into a ball.

With external conduits
- Examine the place where you want to place the exterior conduits. If you want, try to hide them. One good method is to go down vertically to the baseboard, then do the necessary distribution.
- You can trace a line or place the conduit directly. Models vary but you can conduits attach to the walls with adhesives, nails or screws. In the latter case you will need small plugs.
- Conduits are simple to join. There are accessories for making curves and extensions.
- When everything is ready you can install the wires.

Peeling the wire
- Normally one uses three independent conducting wires. Strip the ends.
- If the cable has a common plastic insulation around the outside, you should cut it with a blade but make not to cut the insulation of the three inside. These will each have a different color. Divide the cover with a longitudinal cut.
- Fold the cover back onto the blade and cut it to expose the three wires.
- Now you are ready to peel the insulation of the three wires. It depends on the type of terminal but it should be enough to peel between 8 and 12 millimeters from the end.

The connection
- In order to install a grounded outlet, obviously you need a ground wire and the mechanism must have three terminals, one for the phase, neutral and ground wires.
- If the distribution box does not have a ground, you will have to run one from main distribution box.
- Whether the mechanism works with pressure or is screw-on, it will not be hard to make the connection. To avoid confusion always use the color green-yellow as the ground wire.
- Put the outlet in its box after making the connection and tighten the screws. Put the plastic cover on.
- In the distribution box it is a good idea to join the cables with clips. Respect the colors and you will have no problem.

Tips
- Before connecting definitively, cut the electricity to the mains. Have it all ready and this way it will only take a few minutes. Check how it works. If it does not, turn off the electricity and make sure the connections were done properly.
- There are rules you should follow. For active lines use black, brown or gray; for neutral, the color blue. And for the ground wire, green and yellow.
