How to hang a picture
by Manuel G. Blzquez
Some people say pictures were made to be hung crooked. Indeed, it is common to find them this way in homes and even to get used to seeing them so. Yet there are few tasks as easy as hanging pictures so they don't disturb the harmony of a room. And there are many ways to do it. Here we show you how.

Tools and materials
Drill, wall plugs appropriate to the kind of wall, hooks and eyebolts, a level, cord or wire, yardstick or measuring tape, screwdriver, and the fastening system you deem best.

Small pictures
If the picture you are going to hang does not have fastening gear incorporated, fit it with small rings, circular or triangular, right in the middle of the upper crosspiece of the frame. A small eyebolt will also do.
Nail it in with small nails or screw in with a fine-pointed screwdriver
Remember, it is best if the ring is not visible, so it should not stick out too much
With a hammer, fix the wall with an "easy-fastening" kind of hook that features three small nails that keep it from moving. This way you don't have to drill holes in the wall. If you use just one nail the picture will eventually fall down. Another good technique is to use supports known as X-hooks.
Hang the small picture and center it by moving it from side to side. If you want, use a level to make it perfectly straight. Contact with the wall will keep it horizontal.

If the picture is not so light
If the picture is not so small but you think it doesn't weigh enough to need double fastening to the wall, follow these steps:
On the upright parts of the frame, attach two rings or similar devices. It is important that they be at the same level. Use a yardstick or measuring tape. If the picture has a metal frame or no frame at all, the back of the painting (it should be a sheet of hard cardboard or particle board) should feature some kind of fastening system.
Tie cord, metal wire or brass cord between the two rings. Pull it tight, but leave enough slack so that it yields a little when the picture is hung.
Now hang the picture on the hook you have placed in the wall and seek the middle point in the wire so the picture will not be crooked.

Heavy pictures
First of all, hold the picture up to the wall and choose the best spot by moving the picture around until you decide on the place where you want it to hang.
On the back of the picture, attach two rings appropriate to the weight of the painting, one on each upright. You can also use two anti-slip metal bars you can screw into the frame.
The position of the two rings should be proportionate, i.e. at the same distance from the edge of the frame.
Next take the picture to the chosen spot on the wall. Without touching the wall, use a level to make it perfectly horizontal. If the picture is very large you will need someone to help you hold it.
Then press gently so that the rings leave a mark in the wall.
Drill on those two marks. In the holes, insert plugs and hooks that can handle the weight of the picture. Hang it. If you drilled right, the picture will be straight.

Getting it straight without a level
Even if you don't have a level you can hang a picture straight.
With a yardstick or measuring tape, measure from the ceiling and mark the spot where you want the picture to hang.
Using this figure, make a mark at the same height at the other end of the picture. Then draw a fine line parallel to the ceiling.
Mark the drill points on the wall by measuring the distance between the two rings on the back of the picture and transferring this distance to the line on the wall.
Stepping back from the wall, you can see if the picture is level or not. As a reference point you can use the edge of the ceiling or the floor, or of a door or window frame.
