How to install blinds
by Manuel G. Blzquez
Blinds always come in handy around the house. They help beat the heat in summer, and at other times of year they keep out the window and cold, and also shut out light. Some come with insulation on the strips that help maintain a constant temperature around the house. There are two basic models: drum-style, and the simpler kind, strips that that roll up with the pull of a cord.

Tools and materials
Drill, screwdriver, screws, hammer, hooks, wall plugs, wooden strips and silicone sealant.

Drum-style blinds
-These are the blinds that are attached to rails on the ends. The blinds and the rolling mechanism are enclosed inside a drum-like container.
-Before buying them make sure the window well is deep enough to hold the drum and the rails.
- If the depth is less than that of the drum you will have to attach the latter to the exterior wall, let part of the drum overlap or place inside but first do some masonry work on the window frame.

In the well of the window or door
-Place the mechanism inside the drum and fit the rails in place.
-Hold the drum in the place where you want to install it to make sure it fits.-
In the frame, mark and make a hole through which the belt that will control the blinds will pass. As best you can, set the belt in a vertical position.
-Screw the rails and drug to the frame. If necessary level off first with small wooden profiles screwed to the frame.
-Pass the belt through and attach it to the interior holding mechanism. The latter will be screwed to the frame.

On the wall
-As in the earlier case, do a test to see if the blinds fit.-
Make a hole in the wall for the belt and put the drum and rails in place, drilling holes for plugs in the wall.
-The interior mechanism of the belt is screwed to the wall or embedded in it.
- Seal the joints between the blinds and the wall with special paste or silicon to avoid leakage of water.

Strip blinds
- These are very easy to install, and come with wooden strips or, plastic, which is more common these days. Measure the height and width of the window well and have the blinds made to order. It is a good idea to order them 2 cm's short on each side to allow for uneven spots in the window frame.
- Screw two or more hooks in the well, depending on the weight of the blinds. Keep in mind whether it is wood or metal to choose the right screws.
- In the upper part of the blinds screw two or more nuts at the same distance as the hooks.
- Hang the blinds from the hooks, and it is ready to be used.
-If for any reason you place the blinds on the upper wall of the window well you will have to drill holes and use wall plugs.
