THE BOUTIQUE THE WEATHER INTERACTIVE CAMPSA GUIDE
How much space to leave between plants
by Beln Campos
When it comes to adding a new plant to the garden our first temptation is to buy something attractive, or plant something we got as a gift, or even the Christmas tree, without thinking about how the plant will develop over time. All plant species have a certain growth pattern and reach a point where they do not develop much further. So it is a good idea to find out what their size as an adult will be in order to choose the spot where they can live adequately without the need for cut-backs or pruning that will alter their natural shape. Or you can simply choose a plant that is adequate to the available size.

Different kinds of plants require a specific planting distance:
 Seasonal flowers or perennial plants
To create a flowerbed that is thick you should plant in quincunxes, which means placing them in rows in such a way that each plant is across from an empty spot in the next row over. The flowers should be 15-25 centimeters apart.
 Bulbs
The planting distance for bulbs depends on the reach of the plant. It varies from 5 cm for crocuses to 30 cm for lilies. One very attractive technique is to space them out among ground-covering plants or flowerbeds. This way the soil is decorated all year long. Keep in mind that bulbs tend to have short blooming periods.
 Hedges
To create low hedges with plants like box, they should be planted in quincunxes at a distance of 10 cm from each other. For medium hedges such as privet, the distance extends to 40 cm and for high ones such as yew, as much as 1.5 meters. For hedge screens it is 2 meters.
 Bushes
These plants vary greatly in growth pattern depending on the species and variety. The planting distance depends on what you are trying to achieve: mixed bunches, homogeneous bunches or bushes interspersed with trees.
 Climbing plants
They should be planted at a distance of one meter from each other if you are trying to cover a fence, and two meters in the plant is very robust such as honeysuckle.
 Trees
Here, errors in distance are almost irreparable and so common that before planting a tree you should consider what is the ideal spot and the distance from other plants. Species like liquidambar or fir should be planted 10 meters from each other to allow their roots to stretch out.
