THE BOUTIQUE THE WEATHER INTERACTIVE CAMPSA GUIDE
Watering plants correctly
by Beln Campos
Plants do not usually die of thirst, rather from excessive watering. The amount of water a plant needs depends on its individual requirements, the substrate, the amount of light it receives, as well as room temperature and humidity.

Forwatering to be carried outcorrectly, the water must be ofthe right kind, the timing must be rightas should theamount of water used.

When to water?

  • If the soil in the pot is not moist when you stick your finger down into it a centimetre or two.
  • When the soil separates from the edge of the pot and looks light in colour.
  • If the leaves fall off and the plant sags.
  • If, when you tap the pot, the sound is high-pitched.

  • How to water?
  • Found out if the plant needs a lot of water.
  • Water generously during growth periods, generally in spring and summer.
  • In rest periods, generally in winter, reduce the amount of water used during watering, except for plants that bloom during this time.
  • Plants are watered more often in warm climes, in areas that are bright and sunny, if they are growing in clay pots and above all if the pot is small and full of roots. Also, if the plant has a lot of large leaves.
  • Water plants less frequently is cooler climes with lots of humidity, if they are in spots with little light, if the pot is large and the roots have a lot of earth around them. If so they retain water better.
  • Use water that is lukewarm and soft, with little lime. Let tap water sit out over night; the lime will drop into sediment and the chlorine will evaporate.
  • Never water the leaves or flowers. They will wither more quickly and stains caused by fungi will appear on the leaves.
  • Never water in direct sunlight. Water drops serve as magnifying glasses and burn the leaves.
  • Don't water always in the same area of the pot. You'll eventually form a small canal where the water will flow routinely without wetting the rest of the soil.
  • Remove excess water from the plate under the pot. In general, it is better to water once abundantly rather than water several times and too frequently.
