THE BOUTIQUE THE WEATHER INTERACTIVE CAMPSA GUIDE
Flowering Plants to cheer up the home in winter
by Beln Campos
Now that the days are shorter outdoor plants are preparing for winter. But we spend more time indoors and miss the bright colors of summer flowers.

Most indoor plants come from parts of the world other than ours, namely areas where winter is not so cold. So in order to enjoy them we must keep them warm indoors.

The flowers of indoor plants stand out especially well if they are placed against a background of plants with green foliage and, depending on their color, can be combined with leaves of contrasting colors, or repeating the same tone. Some plants are so spectacular it is a good idea to set them apart against a plain background, or in the middle of a room so they stand out.

The plants that are most spectacular at this time of year and most commonly found in the market are the cyclamen, the azalea shrub, the African violet and the Christmas cactus.

Cyclamens have red, white or pink flowers that stick out from the plant. At Christmas they can be used as decoration instead of the traditional poinsettia. They do well in cool, bright environments.

The azalea shrub blooms all winter. The best way to decorate with them is to place them in groups of pots placed close together. The flowers are large, forming bunches that cover up almost all of the leaves. Watering is crucial. Don't let them dry out, but don't let water stagnate either. Also, these plants do not like calcareous water.

African violets have blossoms that are white, purple, blue or pink, depending on the variety. They are easy to take care of, hardly need water and do well in dry atmospheres.

Christmas cactus are pretty because the plant blooms all over all at once, in red or pink. It is not a good idea to move them when in bloom because it causes the flowers to fall off.

Some general tips
It is best to buy flowering plants in a specialized shop, preferably indoors as opposed to an outdoor market. Most buds should be closed so the plant will last longer. In general, these plants need a lot of light, little water and atmospheric humidity. They don't like abrupt changes in temperature or drafts so keep them away from radiators and doors. It is best not to move them around once you have decided on a place for them. It causes them to lose buds.
