THE BOUTIQUE THE WEATHER INTERACTIVE CAMPSA GUIDE
Transplanting indoor plants
by Beln Campos
There are several symptoms that tell us it's time to change a plant to a larger pot. Some are obvious, but others require a bit more attention.

Which are this symptoms?
- If roots pop through the surface of the soil, either at the top of the pot or through the drainage, it is necessary to switch the plant to a larger pot as soon as possible.

-Another sign that the pot is too small is when the water flows quickly out of the drainage holes and the soil looks compact and dry. In these cases the dirt ball tends to weigh very little.

- Finally, if you see that the plant languishes or fails to grow during a long period of time, and there is no apparent cause for this, you can remove the plant and check its condition. You must change the plant to a large pot if the roots are visible in the sides of the dirt ball or curled up in the bottom of it. If this is not the case, you can leave the plant in the same pot but change the soil. You were probably using the wrong one.

The procedure for changing the plant to another pot is simple but there are a series of essential steps to follow.
- First you must choose a pot you like, with a diameter slightly bigger than that of the old pot. The height of the new pot can be the same as or larger than the original one, but never smaller. If you are changing from a cylindrically-shaped pot to a cone-shaped one, keep in mind that the dirtball must fit comfortably in the bottom of the new one.

- It is important to check that the drainage holes in the bottom are not obstructed, and add a 3- or 4-cm layer of pebbles, gravel or expanded clay. The latter is much lighter than the former.

- Choose the right kind of soil for the plant, keeping in mind that here you cannot skimp. Using the right soil, and quality soil, is the best guarantee for having healthy plants.

- Next, pour a layer of soil in the bottom of the pot on top of the stones and pack it gently with your hands. Make sure the top of the soil ball is 3 cm below the upper edge of the pot, and that the plant is centered and stands straight. Fill in the sides little by little, tapping the pot with a trowel, until the level reaches the top of the soil ball.

- Finally, never forget that a recently transplanted plant must be watered immediately, unless the ball is already quite wet or the plant suffers from an excess of water. If the transplanting is done outdoors, it is best to do it at dusk, and never in bright sunlight.
