How to care indoor plants in winter
by Beln Campos
Winter takes its toll on indoor plants, both from changes in temperature and use of heating or if they are in rooms without it. You just need to apply basic measures to help them survive this season without problems.

Neither cold nor heat
- Some plants can't withstand cold draughts or frost, so they should not be placed in transit areas or near windows that are opened often.
- Keep the leaves of plants from touching window panes.
- On very cold nights, protect plants near windows by separating them from the lower part of the glass with cork, polystyrene or a newspaper. It is also a good idea to place similar insulation under plants located near windows facing north.
- Avoid placing plants on top of radiators and if you have no choice, water them more often and spray the leaves to keep them from drying out. High temperatures from heating systems stimulates plant growth but they don't find the necessary support with low levels of light, which causes imbalanced development.

Light
Winter days are shorter and the light less intense. So you should place plants that need the most light near windows and make up for the lack of natural light by providing artificial light.

Watering
- Space out watering as much as possible. Plants rest when they receive less light. So if you water them a lot, you stimulate a growth that does not correspond to the light they receive, giving rise to an imbalance. Leaves will look thin with brown spots, and mold will appear in the soil. So space the watering out.
- Use lukewarm water when you water.
- Try to water plants at the warmest time of day, never at night, because with lower temperatures the roots suffer more.
- Don't let water accumulate in the plate under the pot. The roots could rot for lack of air.
Moisture
- Spray water on the leaves of plants most sensitive to dry air.
- Don't spray the flowers of plants that produce them in winter, the buds will not last as long.
- Install humidifiers
- If plants with the greatest need for moisture, place them in bowls full of peat, which should be kept wet at all times.

Fertilizer
Plants should not be fertilised in winter, expect those which are in bloom. You should wait until the plant is in a period of active growth.
