There are several materials considered ideal for growing plants: clay, plastic, metal and artificial stone.

The best known ones are flowerpots made of clay. They allow roots to develop freely because they can breathe through the walls of the pot. They also regulate the internal temperature, protecting roots even if they are exposed to the sun. There are many models on the market, from tall ones to round ones to glazed ones. Simpler ones allow the plants themselves to take prominence. If you place them outside make sure they can withstand frost and keep them in a protected spot. In general clay pots are heavier than those of other materials, so you must keep this in mind if their definitive place is on a balcony with a limited capacity to hold weight.

An alternative material is plastic. It is long-lasting, durable and lightweight. The down side is its high price. They are ideal for use indoors, and these days there are attractive models made to simulate antique clay pots. When placed outdoors their durability is diminished and the plants are more vulnerable to temperature swings.

Metal is also used, namely in pots made of zinc and galvanized iron. These pots are generally light but there are few models on the market and they are hard to find.

Other kinds of receptacles are empty cans, such as those used to store olives or oil. With holes punched in the bottom, they can be a clever decorating strategy.

In general, plants of different color in terms of both flowers and leaves combine perfectly in different kinds of pots and materials. Whether the final result is attractive depends on the fantasy and creativity of the gardener.
