Lawn-care tools
by Beln Campos
Lawns require much work and dedication. Choosing the right tools can make the job easier.

Aside from watering equipment, the most essential tools when it comes to caring for a lawn are those used for mowing. The lawn mower is essential. It can be electric or gasoline-powered. The former are recommended for lawns up to 200 square meters. They are cheaper than gas-powered ones, easier to use and easier to maintain. You have to be careful with the electrical cable, and at first this is a bit tedious. But when you get used to
it this kind of mower is easy to use.

Gasoline-powered mowers need more maintenance and it is a good idea to tune them up each winter before the mowing season starts. They are recommended for large lawns in which it is difficult to use an electrical cable. If the lawn is very large or inclined, you will have to choose a mower with traction or even a tractor. In any case, buy an established brand to avoid problems with repairs. And keep the blade sharp and disinfected so the cut is clean and you don't spread fungi.

Caring for a lawn
If the lawn is well designed and a space has been left between its edge and any flower beds or plants, you can mow the whole lawn with a mower. Otherwise you will have to trim the edges first with a wire-spinning cutter. As with lawnmowers, these can be electric or gasoline-powered and the choice depends on how large an area you have to cut. These devices can be dangerous if you have to cut grass at the base of a tree or bus because they can hurt the trunk and leave gashes that become sources of infection. To do this job it is better to use shears. These are also good for edges of the lawn if you don't have to cut much.

Keeping up a lawn
If you want the lawn to have a straight edge, you should maintain it with a gardening shovel. This is a square, flat shovel that cuts the lawn. It is also good for repairing small zones with sod.

In autumn you will need a rake to remove dead leaves that fall on the lawn and will otherwise rot, damaging it and looking bad. If this is cumbersome or the area is large, you can use a leaf vacuum. Here, too, you have different devices to choose from. Some suck the leaves in, others blow them away, others do both and some even chop the leaves into bits.

Once a year the lawn needs to be scarified. This involves removing weeds to rejuvenate the grass. If the surface is small you can do it manually, although it is hard work. If it is large, you will need to use a rotor-tiller. This is a large machine you will use just once a year so it may be best to rent one rather than buy.

The same applies for ventilators, which are like rolling pins with prongs that penetrate the earth and let air in. They are necessary when the earth is compact and drains poorly. It is best to ventilate right before you add washed river sand or a substrate rich in peat, or a mix of the two depending on what kind of problems the lawn has. There are cleats you can wear to walk around and punch holes to let air seep into the soil. They don't go down far, but they are still better than walking on the lawn with other kinds of shoes.
