Be it for safety reasons, curiosity or the need for peace of mind, video surveillance over the Internet is becoming more and more popular. In recent years many parents have installed cameras in their homes so they can so what is happening when they are away easily and at any time. But it is in the business world where the real boom is under way in use of these systems, which owners install to see what happens when they are not around.
Easy to install Besides their usefulness, another reason these systems have become so popular is that they are so easy to install. A web cam, also known as an IP (Internet Protocol) and an ADSL connection are enough to set up one of these systems in a home or office. These devices have their own server, which means that to access what the camera is viewing all you need to do is type the camera's web address into an Internet navigator, just as if it were any old web page, then add the password. Seconds later, as if by magic, the computer screen turns into an eye that shows you what is going on many miles away.
Some cameras feature simple software that let you see the image as is or make it more distant, or change parameters such as contrast or tone. You can also add a microphone, allowing you to hear what is going on as well. Manufacturers such as Axis, Panasonic, Veo, Convision and Sony market cameras with such features. When it comes to setting them up, choose the best spot. They can be placed on the ceiling, on a wall or inside a piece of furniture. They can be in plain view or go unnoticed, for which there are models that blend right in with the decor of a room. Then all you have to do is plug them into the electrical grid and the ADSL line, either through a cable or in a wireless fashion.
Motion detectors The most sophisticated models have features that make them real allies around the house, such as the ability to detect motion in the most sensitive areas. When such motion is detected, an SMS message of warning is sent, or an email with images of what was captured in that precise instant. But they can also activate an external mechanism such as an alarm, lights or lowering the blinds of the house. A whole world of possibilities that will be a daily reality in just a few more years.
