Synopsis: Charlot (Charles Chaplin) is a builder who works on the assembly line of a modern factory tightening screws until, one day, he suffers a nervous breakdown and is sent to hospital. When he recovers and leaves the hospital, he is mistaken for a radical leader and imprisoned. He is finally released due to good behaviour and finds a job as a dockworker. However, after making an involuntary mistake, he is sacked and then arrested after leaving a restaurant without paying. In the police van he meets La Chica (Paulette Goddard), an attractive orphan who has been arrested for stealing bread.
