Synopsis: In a Pennsylvania town of Russian immigrants, Michael (Robert de Niro), Nick (Christopher Walken) and Steven (John Savage) say goodbye to their co-workers at a steel mill because they have been drafted to fight in the Vietnam war. That day Steven marries Angela (Rutanya Alda) and celebrates at length with his friends. During the party Nick asks his girlfriend Linda (Meryl Streep) to marry him after the war. After the reception the friends go off into the country to hunt deer. The three friends are captured after a spell in battle in Vietnam and although they manage to escape, while Nick is rescued by a helicopter, Steven breaks both legs falling from a great height. Michael helps him reach a military vehicle. Michael returns to Pennsylvania and finds out through Angela that Steven is in the hospital. He goes to see him and sees that his friend has lost his legs. He also learns that Steven receives money periodically from Saigon. Shortly thereafter, Michael goes back to Vietnam in search of Nick.
