Synopsis: In the Middle Ages, the knight Antonius Blok (Max von Sydow) and his squire J�ns (Gunnar Bj�rnstrand) return from the Crusades suffering a religious crisis that makes them question the existence of God, and they find their country ravaged by plague. On the beach, Death (Bengt Ekerot) appears, and wants to take the knight with him. Blok instead propses a game of chess to decide his fate. So he returns to the beach every now and then to make his move. Meanwhile, as the two men head toward the Blok castle, they run into a variety of people in a landscape of utter desolation.
