Synopsis: Margo Channing (Bette Davis) is a veteran star of the theater with a temperamental character. She hires the apparently sweet Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter) as her secretary and aide but in reality what Eve wants is to be an actress. Margo begins to lose trust in Eve when the latter pays too much attention to theater director Bill Sampson (Gary Merril) at a party. Margo persuades businessman Max Fabian (Gregory Ratoff) to give the young woman an office job so she can get rid of her. She also promises the critic De Witt (George Sanders) that she will propose his fianc�e Miss Casswell (Marilyn Monroe) as an understudy in the play in which she is going to perform. One day Margo is late and misses a reading. She is surprised to learn that Eve has read her part and landed the understudy position. This irks Margo.
