Synopsis: A space ship lands by night in a forest in California, and out come some extra-terrestrials eager to inspect the area. They have to leave in a hurry as some curious humans approach, and leave behind of their colleagues. Feeling frightened, he hides in the home of Mary (Dee Wallace), a newly separated woman who lives with her three small children. It's the middle child, Elliott (Henry Thomas) who discovers the creature, and shares with him a sincere and tender friendship. Eventually he lets his siblings in on the secret. The children help E.T. transmit appeals for help to his friends in space and protect him from police and scientists who want to catch him and investigate his powers.
