Synopsis: The American writer Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) travels to decadent Vienna after World War II because his friend Harry Line (Orson Welles) has offered him a job. But when arrives he learns that Line died under strange circumstances and attends his funeral. Then he meets Line's beautiful lover, Anna Schmidt (Alida Valli), a Czech refugee persecuted by the Russians, and major Calloway (Trevor Howard). The latter is a Briton who is convinced that Line was involved in a case of tainted pennicilin that killed several people in the city. Martins probes his friend's death by speaking with witnesses. But their testimony does not coincide, especially with regard to a third man who was present at the accident in which Line was killed. No one knows who the third man is.
