Synopsis: Police Lieutenant Mark MacPherson (Dana Andrews) investigates the assassination of Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney), director of an ad agency, who has turned up murdered with her face disfigured. MacPherson digs up Laura's past and interrogates people who knew her, including her protector, Waldo Lydecker (Clifton Webb), a celebrated radio journalist who was obsessed with the beautiful Laura. MacPherson discovers that just before her murder, Laura had become engaged to Shelby Carpenter (Vicent Price), to the distress of Ann Treadwell (Judith Anderson), a woman in love with Shelby, and Lydecker himself. Lieutenant MacPherson also becomes enchanted by Laura as the investigation proceeds.
