Synopsis: Scottie Ferguson (James Stewart) is a former police detective who left the force after the death of his partner and who has suffered from vertigo ever since. One day he receives a call from Galvin Elster (Tom Helmore), asking him to follow his wife Madeleine (Kim Novak), who seems to have suicidal tendencies. Scottie falls in love with the beautiful and mysterious woman and saves her from drowning on one occasion. However, paralysed by vertigo, he is unable to save her when she jumps off the top of a church bell tower. Desolated, he falls into a deep depression, which he cannot get over. One day he spots a redhead on the street, whose prime characteristic is her extraordinary similarity to Madeleine.
