Synopsis: One morning millions of years ago, a group of apes that were man's predecessors discover a black monolith that is giving off a strange sound. Later, one of them (Daniel Ritcher) learns to use a bone as a weapon to kill a rival, taking the first step toward human intelligence. In 2001, on a lunar research base, the monolith appears again. Some time later the space ship Discovery heads toward Jupiter with Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea), Frank Poole (Gary Lockwood) and three other astronauts aboard in a state of deep sleep. The craft is piloted by Hal 9000, an intelligent computer which commits an error, then tries to kill the three sleeping crew members in order to cover up. Bowman and Poole take on the computer in an effort to put the situation back under control.
