Synopsis: The Jones and Barry theater company is preparing a musical entitled Pretty Lady, with the goal of triumphing on Broadway. On the wishes of Abner Dillon (Guy Kibbee), the businessman financing the play, the female lead goes to Dorothy Brock (Bebe Daniels), a beautiful but untalented actress. The prestigioso Julian Marsh (Warner Baxter) does the directing and wants to make Pretty Lady his best show ever. He convenes auditions in which Peggy Sawyer (Ruby Keeler), who in spite of her shyness and inexperience captivates the leading man Billy Lawler (Dick Powell), who lands her a role in the chorus line. A broken ankle sidelines Dorothy before the opening, giving Peggy a chance to show her talent.
