Synopsis: In the year 2026, the population of the city of Metropolis is segregated according to social class, with the landlords living on the surface and the labourers living underground, working non-stop. One day, by chance, Freder Fredersen (Gustav Fr�hlich), son of the city mayor John Fredersen (Alfred Abel) notices the beautiful Maria (Brigitte Helm), leader of the workers accompanied by a group of children, and decides to follow her underground. Freder then confronts his father to ask him why the workers receive such terrible treatment. His father, busy looking over some strange maps, does not give any explanation. The mayor then asks Rotwag (Rudolf Klein-Rogge), creator of Metropolis and busy working on a female robot of human appearance to kidnap Maria and give the android her features to confuse and manipulate the workers.
