Ephemera / Por narices / Three centuries of Neapolitan painting
Ephemera
La vida sobre papel. Biblioteca Nacional. Paseo de Recoletos, 20. Madrid. Until 7 January 2004. Xxx euros
Ephemera - from the Greek ephmeros - is the name given to all paper-based work with a specific purpose, not to outlive the contemporary nature of its message. This significant exhibition brings together works dating from 1850 to 1950 belonging to Spain's National Library. Some 700,000 works make up this explosion of colour in the shape of greetings cards, stamps, programs, ID cards, calendars, stickers and games, among other daily objects. Not only is this collection a run-through the evolution of graphic art during much of the 20th century, it also offers an entertaining journey through life.

Por narices
Esencias y fragancias naturales. Centro Cultural de la Fundacin La Caixa. Joan Camps, 1. Granollers (Barcelona). From 15 December to January 2004. Free entry
The Fundacin La Caixa offers this exciting encounter with natural fragrances: from the aroma of cinnamon, myrrh or lemon to the nauseous secretion of the civet cat (a small African animal) with which, according to legend, King Solomon once perfumed himself. Por narices. Esencias y fragancias naturales celebrates the power of one of the most ignored senses in this type of events: smell. You simply need to close your eyes to enjoy the smell of the school (a mixture of mandarine, pencil, urea, dust and damp), of the church (dust, incense, wax and damp), of chewing gum or of a burnt forest. An interactive exhibition that will undoubtedly live long in the memory.

Three centuries of Neapolitan painting
Museo de Bellas Artes. C/ San Po V, 9. Valencia. Until 15 February 2004. Free entry
After visiting most of Latin America and other Spanish autonomous communities, the exhibition Three centuries of Neapolitan painting reaches Valencia. A total of 53 works by 43 artists, belonging to the artistic movement of 17th to 19th century Naples from the museums of San Martino and Capodimonte and the Valerio collection of Geneva make up this exhibition that begins with the influence of Caravaggio (from 1606 to 1610) and ends with gloomy naturalism. Reality and fantasy combine in these chromatically rich oil paintings and watercolours that surprise with their unique luminosity. ISABELLE BOIX
