Our look at the world�s best museums continues. Here we discuss museums in the Americas, from Chile to the United States.


Argentina
Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Buenos Aires).� It was created under a government decree issued on July 16, 1895 and inaugurated in December 1896. Its collection includes masterpieces by Argentine, American and European artists.
Museo de Arte Contempor�neo (Buenos Aires).� Inaugurated on April 11, 1995, it is the first museum to open in the province of� Buenos Aires. It is dedicated exclusively to contempory art, and stands out because of the wealth of information it provides on exhibits and artists.
Museo Nacional de Arte Decorativo� (Buenos Aires).� It opened in 1937 when the government bought the residence and collection of Don Mat�as Err�zuriz and his wife Do�a Josefina de Alvear. The museum�s main selling points are the design of the building housing it, its decoration and the quantity, diversity and wealth of its collection.

Chile
Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino (Santiago).� With its strategic location in the city center, the museum aims to be a window on the pre-Columbian and indigenous worlds. It places special emphasis on its many artistic and plastic displays.

United States
Philadelphia Museum of Art. This museum, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, features one of the world�s largest collections of Japanese painting, with more than 100 works, and a wide series of paintings that trace the history of the United States.
Museum of Modern Art (New York). It has one of the best and most complete collections of modern art. Founded in 1929 with private funds, since then it has set the benchmark for other such museums. It offers a rich and stimulating blend of art and such works as Picasso�s The Ladies of Avignon and Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh.
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York). This site houses one of the world�s best collections of modern and contemporary art. The building itself is one of the museum�s main masterpieces. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and has been described as looking like an enormous white seashell. It has numerous works by Picasso including Woman Ironing and Woman with Yellow Hair.
Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). It was created in 1870 by a group of artists and philanthropists seeking an institution that could rival those of Europe. It is said to possess the western world�s widest collection of art, with works that range from prehistory to current days, including ancient Egypt and North American decorative arts from colonial times.
National Gallery of Art (Washington). It owes its existence to barons like Andrew Mellon, who donated his collection of 21 paintings that he had bought from the Hermitage, and Samuel H. Kress who did the same with his collection of Italian art. It features major works by Italian artists such as Fra Ang�lico, Leonardo da Vinci and Rafael. All the schools of in European art are represented in this museum, considered the Louvre of� Washington.
Phillips Collection (Washington). This is an ideal place for fans of Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings. It is housed in an elegant old private mansion and features works by Van Gogh, Paul C�zanne, �douard Manet and Auguste Renoir, among others.

Mexico
Museo de Arte Contempor�neo Carrillo Gil (Mexico City).� It is without a doubt Mexico�s most important museum. It carries out activities related to exhibiting and promoting works in its permanent collection and has staged numerous exhibits of contemporary art from Mexico and abroad.

Venezuela
Museo de Arte Contempor�neo (Caracas). Better known as Sof�a Imber, this museum offers a major collection of contemporary art, both Venezuelan and foreign. The artists represented include Fernando Botero, Marc Chagall, Fernand L�ger and Pedro Le�n Zapa.
