The Museums of Africa

Africa remains one of the least known continents, above all culturally-speaking. Africa not only consists of vast plains, impressive countryside, interminable deserts or wild animals. It also boasts a vast cultural legacy that we can fortunately contemplate thanks to the presence of numerous museums. Here are some of the most representative.

Cameroon
Yaund� National Museum�
Located in the capital, this museum is the pick of Cameroon's public museums. Its collection includes archaeological pieces originating from Sao civilization in the north of the country, traditional art and a wide range of modern paintings.

Benedictine Museum�
Located in the city of Mont-Febe, this small museum was founded in 1910. Most of the objects belong to the Tikar, Bamoun and Bamileke civilizations.

Egypt
Museum of Egypt
An obligatory visit for all those travelling to Egypt and, more precisely, Cairo. Founded in 1835 to protect Egyptian monuments and treasures from local and foreign bounty hunters, it is currently the most prestigious museum of Egyptian antiquities in the world. It houses objects from all periods and locations.

Egyptian Museum of Modern Art
Built in 1936 and designed by the architect Moustafa Bey Fahmi, the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art is located in Cairo and exhibits over 10,000 paintings and sculptures that represent the evolution of modern Egyptian art, from the early 20th century right up to the present day.

Morocco
Rabat Archaeological Museum
Located in the capital and built in 1932 this museum was later enlarged to display the latest archaeological discoveries. It is one of the most important in the country, with a prehistoric section that houses human remains dating from the Palaeolithic to the Neolithic age (4000 B.C.). The Islamic architecture room is also recommended, with remains from the 8th to the 9th centuries.

Namibia
Namibia National Museum
Located in the capital, Windhoek, this museum houses over 350,000 archaeological objects and exhaustive documentation covering 3,500 archaeological sites.

Nigeria
�National Museum of Nigeria
Located in the city of Lagos this museum possesses one of Nigeria's largest collections. The objects date from 500 B.C. to 200 A.D. and include terracotta heads from Nok.

South Africa
Durban Art Gallery
A celebrated museum that houses both ancient and modern art: from anonymous carvings to traditional ceramic vases via the painting of English masters. It can be found in the city of Durban.

Sudan
National Museum of Sudan
Located in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, it contains antiquities dating from different periods of Sudanese history; ceramics, statues from the Cush dynasty, the Buhen and Semna temples of Hatshepsut and Tutmosis III recuperated during the works to build the Assan dam.

Tanzania
Sukuma Museum
Designed in 1968, the Sukuma museum and cultural centre aims to promote the culture of the Tanzanian city via its traditional and modern art.

Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe National Gallery
Located in Harare, the country's capital, the National Gallery has been displaying a small but representative collection of African sculptures for over 40 years.
