Spanish Paradors (state-run hotels)
by Francisco Javier Palazn
A combination of culture and tradition, Spain's paradors are a unique tourist proposition. Below you will find a selection of some of the most representative paradors in which to spend the summer holiday, where the quiet of the past enables guests to escape the noise of the 21st century.

Parador of Hondarribia (Guipzcoa)
This parador dates back to the 10th century, when it was founded by Sancho, the Navarran king. It is located in a spectacular castle, which maintains the structure of a medieval fortress including thick walls and immense stone blocks. The interior has been completely restored and offers impressive views of the Basque and French coast.

Parador of Trujillo (Cceres)
Housed in the Convent of Santa Clara, which gives the hotel a peaceful and serene atmosphere. Its two cloisters stand out: one of which dates back to Renaissance times, with impressive arches and columns. Also worth noting are the ample salons, rooms and bedrooms, which retain a uniquely monastic character. An ideal spot for a relaxing break.

Parador of Arcos de la Frontera (Cdiz)
Located in the ancient Casa del Corregidor, its chief characteristic is the impressive panorama of the river Guadalete plain and the old town of Arcos de la Frontera. Its rooms complete with balconies boast magnificent views and the interior rooms look out on to a typical Andalusian patio. It makes for the perfect start-off point for a tour of the so-called Pueblos Blancos y del Vino (white wine-producing villages).

Parador of Jarandilla de la Vera (Cceres)
A castle-palace that was the dwelling of Charles V in the months previous to his trip towards the Monastery of Yuste, where he spent the final days of his life. Its towers, large courtyard and swimming pool surrounded by olive and orange trees stand out.

Parador of Cuenca (Cuenca)
Facing the famous Hanging Houses and located deep in the Hucar gorge, the former Monastery of San Pablo is one Spain's most impressive paradors. It has comfortable rooms, some of which have magnificent views, a glass-covered cloister and a pleasant cafeteria, located in the former chapel.

Parador of Sigenza (Guadalajara)
Located in an imposing castle raised on an Arab alcazar whose construction began in 1123. For centuries it was the residence of bishops, cardinals and kings. The hotel boasts ample rooms, some with four-poster beds and balconies, genuine royal palace lodgings complete with noble salons and a 13th century Romanesque chapel. An ideal spot to rest and enjoy this historic city surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Parador of Granada (Granada)
There are few hotels as exclusive as this parador, built by the Catholic Kings, in which the dream of spending a night in the gardens of the Alhambra among fountains, trees and arch-shaped windows comes alive.

Parador of La Gomera (Santa Cruz de Tenerife)
This building conserves the island's traditional and characteristic architecture, although the heavenly surroundings and sea-views (the island of Tenerife and the Teide volcano) also stand out. Its interior is full of sea-related objects and navigation instruments that evoke the boats that departed from here on route to America. The bedrooms are very comfortable, as are the swimming pool and garden, complete with exuberant subtropical vegetation.

Parador of Argmaniz (lava)
Located in a fine Renaissance palace, with views of the Gorbea mountain range and the Ullibarri Gamboa reservoir. Napoleon himself rested here before attacking the city of Vitoria/Gasteiz. The hotel boasts spacious banquet rooms, dining halls and bedrooms in which wood is the decorating material of choice.

Parador of Pontevedra (Pontevedra)
Located in the old town in a palace that was the former residence of the Counts of Maceda. Its interior is full of antiques and regal furniture such as mirrors, paintings and candelabra. It boasts a fine dining hall and carved stone steps which lead to stately and comfortable rooms. Its location is perfect for touring myriad beaches and coves.
