Monasteries of the north of Spain (II)
by Francisco Javier Palazn
As a result of Spain's Catholic tradition, the country's monasteries are a major part of the historic and cultural heritage of the land. Following our run-through of the major monasteries of the centre of the country we continue with a list of the northern monasteries.

La Corua
Monasterio de Santa Mara de Sobrado
Located in Sobrado Dos Monxes, this 15th century monastery belongs to the Cister congregation. Its main features are the hospice, cloister and church. It currently houses 14 people who must integrate into the monastic life to the degree possible.

Asturias
Monasterio de San Pedro de Covadonga
This monastery is located just seven kilometres from Cangas de Ons and at the heart of the Picos de Europa national park. Thousands of pilgrims make the journey to this monastery every year, especially to visit the new chapel in which according to legend the virgin visited Don Pelayo the night before he was due to fight the muslim armies.

Monasterio de San Pedro de Villanueva
Located between Cangas de Ons and Arriondas, this monastery has been converted into the Parador Nacional of Cangas de Ons and was declared a national monument in 1907. It was built in the 12th century and restored in the 18th. It is found next to the river Sella, and its rooms afford spectacular views of the Picos de Europa.

La Rioja
Monasterio de Valvanera
Located 14 kilometres from Anguiano in a fabulous setting: in the heart of the Sierra de la Demanda, at a height of 1,026 metres. It was first built in the 10th century, and is currently run by a community of Benedictine monks. The main architectural features are the hospice and church, whose interior includes the virgin who gave here name to the place and who is visited by thousand of pilgrims every year.

Monasterio de Suso and Monasterio de Yuso (San Milln de la Cogolla)
Although many believe this is a single monastery, it is in fact two buildings located in the tiny valley of the river Crdenas. The Monasterio de Suso is of great cultural importance, as it holds some of the most valued manuscripts and codes of the Middle Ages. Its monasteries includes caves and different architectural styles, such as mozarabic and Romanesque. The Monasterio de Yuso, meanwhile, is Renaissance and baroque in style. Thousands of valuable manuscripts were copied there over a period of many centuries.

Navarra
Monasterio de Leire
Those who have travelled along the Way of Santiago are certain to remember this fine building located on the motorway between Pamplona and Jaca. This monastery has been a refuge for pilgrims since its construction in the 9th century. Its Romanesque church remains in good condition, as does its three outer apses, its tower, its Porta Speciosa and the interior chapels.

Pontevedra
Monasterio Santa Maria de Aciveiro
Founded in 1135 and run by the Cistercian order, this monastery is Romanesque and baroque in style, and contains an impressive central courtyard. Its hospice permits the visitor to forget the world outside in what is a genuinely monumental hotel. Its rooms, the former monks' quarters, are ample.

Orense
Monasterio de San Clodio
Founded in 928 in the heart of the Ribeiro wine region, this monastery has been perfectly restored as a four-star hotel. It still retains the main features of the monastery, such as the splendid cloisters, one Renaissance in style and the other baroque.

Santander
Monasterio de Santo Toribio de Libana
Declared of National Cultural Iterest in 1953, this monastery was founded in the mid-VIII, which makes it one of the oldest in the region.
