Collecting cameras
by Francisco Javier Palazn
Collecting different camera models is a common hobby of professional and amateur photographers. To some it becomes a genuine passion, leading them to all sorts of shops and markets the world over in search of the most unusual models.

Camera collectors claim that they prefer to possess the highest number of models in order to have a piece of photographic history in their hands. And the truth is that these become an ideal way of finding out how the design and technology of photographic cameras has evolved over the years, not to mention that of man himself.

Camera categories
Most camera collectors do not follow a strict criteria in categorising their models. They tend to be placed in a prominent position in the house, such as a shelf or glass-fronted display, but in no particular order. However, there are some who do follow some sort of criteria, usually according to one of the following three systems:

- According to the focusing system.
There are two systems: direct vision via the viewer or via the lens. The former can include cameras that have a simple framing viewer, without any sort of lens, or other types of measurement, such as a precise rangefinder.

The latter usually include reflex cameras (i.e. those that use combinations of mirrors to carry the image from the lens to the viewfinder). These are in turn divided into SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras, in which a single lens frames, focuses and takes the picture and TLR (Twin Lens Reflex), with two lenses: one to frame and focus, and the other, usually of better quality, to take the picture.

- According to the type of negative used
. The first cameras used plates that were later replaced by the popular film cartridges that were divided into different formats: 35 millimetre, 6x9 centimetre and 6x6 centimetre.

- According to the type of shutter
. This is the feature that allows light to pass through to the negative, depending on the time selected once the camera button is pressed. These are highly precise mechanisms that vary in speed. They can be located inside the lens, between the lens and the body or just in front of the negative.

The most sought after models
Any collector worth his salt must own models by one of the following manufacturers, considered the most prestigious and prominent names in the history of photography, among their collection:
- Kodak. Launched its first model in 1888, and has since been noted for making affordable and popular cameras. It was the first manufacturer to launch a model that used a 35 mm film that could be loaded in daylight.
- Leica. This manufacturer is famous for the high quality of its cameras that are highly appreciated by collectors.
- Nikon. Founded in Japan in 1917 as a maker of optical instruments, did not start producing cameras until 1946. Up until 1959 it made cameras with high quality rangefinders that are very popular among collectors.
- Rollei. Established in Germany in 1920, its TLR cameras have traditionally been regarded as the most prestigious in that they are the most commonly used among professionals.
- Voitgtlander. Launched the first all-metal camera in 1840. Halfway through 1960 launched several handheld models, high quality rangefinders and reflex cameras.
- Zeiss-Ikon. Founded back in 1846 by Carl Zeiss, manufacturer of what are considered the best scientific and photographic instruments. After World War II, Zeiss-Ikon became known for its huge variety of models and for the quality of its lenses. Disappeared in 1972 as a result of not being able to compete with the prices of the Japanese cameras.
