Were going to the zoo!
by Javier Palazn
Zoos perform a dual function of immense value: firstly they take in animals that would have difficulties surviving in the wild, and secondly they teach visitors to know and respect animals. At Christmas time, when we have time to rest and relax, its an excellent idea to visit a zoo with some friends or family. To help you choose, we will run through the main zoos in Spain with you.

 Barcelona Zoo
Location: Parque de la Ciutadella. Tel. 93 225 67 80
One of the best zoos de Spain. It is located in a more than 100 year old garden covering 13 hectares. It has a collection of animals made up of more than 400 different species from all over the world, with a total of 7,500 specimens featuring a wide range of primates -all of them in danger of extinction- of which Copito de nieve (the albino gorilla) is the star. There is also a collection of titi monkeys; a group of bottlenose dolphins; the Iberian wolf; big cats like the Sumatran tiger, leopards from Sri Lanka, or the snow panther; a wide range of mammals; a colony of grey herons or the Doana aviary, where the most important species of native fauna are bred to repopulate Catalonias natural parks. Plus there is a bird house where you can find a collection of parrots from all over the world, and a reptile house, with amphibians and reptiles from the five continents.

 Madrid Zoo-Aquarium
Location: Casa de Campo de Madrid. Tel. 91 512 37 70
One of the most prestigious zoos in Spain both for its size and the number of animals which live in it. After the death of the giant panda Chuln, the zoos new stars are a pair of koala bears -their cuddly ash-grey teddy bear look makes them a favourite with children- which are very hard to see in the flesh outside Australia. One of the biggest attractions is the aquarium, in which more than 200 species of fish and invertebrates have been assembled in 35 aquaria. The animals are organised so that the tour is like a voyage in a submarine during which the visitor will come across fascinating species like the red clownfish, the butterfly fish, the long tentacle anemone, the zebra moray or the red shark. In the dolphinarium you can see the dolphins in action. There are also continuous exhibitions of birds on the wing.

 Santillana Zoo
Location: Santillana del Mar (Cantabria) Tel. 942 81 81 25
After being revamped many times this prestigious zoo currently occupies an area of 45,000 square metres and is home to more than 2,000 animals, with some of the most complete zoological collections in Spain. It is laid out in beautiful grounds, full of trees and plants with all sorts of useful signs along its paths to help you find your way round. One of the most attractive thematic areas of the zoo is the Butterfly Garden, a tropical zone with temperatures of between 26 and 30 degrees centigrade all year round and a relative humidity of 90%, in which hundreds of butterflies live in semi-liberty.

 Jerez Zoo
Location: Jerez de la Frontera (Cdiz) Tel. 956 18 23 97
One of the oldest and most prestigious zoos and botanical gardens in Spain. It is situated in grounds surrounded by plants, ponds and gardens, and it is designed so the animals live in maximum comfort in a habitat which is as similar to their natural one as possible. It currently houses 1,300 animals of 200 species from the five continents, many of them in danger of extinction.
